Texel was connected to the mainland until 1170; it became an island through the Allerheiligenvloed (All Saints Flooding) of 1170. The Allerheiligenvloed of 1170 was a major flooding that occurred when the North Sea broke through the dunes between the current Huisduinen and Texel. In 1415 it acquired city rights, and in the 17th and 19th centuries Eierland became connected to Texel and became part of it.
