Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 7 January / February 2018 Live from Canada The Top of the Mountain at 875 m Eighth stop: Mont-Tremblant, QC - stay 3 nights at the  Residence Inn Manoir Labelle Whoever says skiing in the province of Quebec, says Mont Tremblant. Mont-Tremblant is a place in the Laurentides (Laurentian Mountains) and is located approximately 130 kilometers northwest of Montreal and 140 kilometers northeast of Ottawa. Mont-Tremblant is best known for the  Mont Tremblant Ski Resort   which is located 5 kilometers from here and is called Mont-Tremblant Village. It lies at the foot of the highest mountain (no less than 875m) called Mont Tremblant (derived from local Algonquin Indians who called it "Trembling Mountain"). Mont-Tremblant Village In the winter months, the surrounding mountains are covered with a thick layer of snow, making the Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort a good business. Mont-Tremblant is also a good base for visiting the epo

Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 6 January / February 2018 Live from Canada Main Building Parliament Hill Seventh stop: Ottawa, ON - stay 2 nights at the  Fairmont Château Laurier Today I’m driving from Kingston to Ottawa, a new place to discover. The distance was not much and the weather did its best, it was just a bit cloudy. The first time I visited Eastern Canada, I slept very disrespectfully outside Ottawa, but now I thought it should happen.. And this is partly why I chose the Fairmont Hotel, a real classic, because the hotel is strategically located on the banks of the Rideau Canal and somewhat elevated it gives a beautiful view of Parliament Hill. Left Château Laurier, middle Rideau Lockstations, right East Wing of the Parliament Building Some History . For a long time Ottawa was the homeland of the Odawa tribe. They belonged to the Algonquin Indians, a group that claims never to occupy other territories by force. In 1983, the Odawa filed a claim wi

Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 5 January / February 2018 Live from Canada Sixth stop: Kingston, ON - stay 1 night at the  Residence Inn Kingston Water's Edge Again an overnight stay to bridge the distance, these are distances that are easy to drive during the summer but in the winter you do not know what to expect. And those winter issues came in fast. So my plan to drive via the coastal road went up in smoke. On departure from Niagara Fall it was still okay but snow was expected at the end of the afternoon. I wanted to be at the destination before the snow arrived, but unfortunately that seems to be impossible due to crowds in the Toronto area and lots of snow plows on the road that were bravely removing the ice / snow layer. Resulting in an 4 hours drive becoming an almost 6 hours drive Kingston seemed like a nice place to make an intermediate stop but due to the bad circumstances I could not honor Kingston that it deserves. Its really a shame becau

Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 4 January / February 2018 Live from Canada American Falls, Niagara Falls, New York State during sunset. Fifth stop: Niagara Falls, ON - stay 2 nights at the  Marriot on The Falls. Note: I made a change in plans as my fifth stop actually should have been my overnight stay in Syracuse, NY but the weather prediction was so bad that I decided to make the long drive from Lake Placid to Niagara Fall at once. This was a 570 km but luckely the roads were good. Thus today I will cross the border to Canada again. The Niagara Falls are probably the most famous attraction in the province of Ontario. They are among the largest and most famous waterfalls in the world. The waterfall consists of three parts: the Horseshoe Falls in Ontario, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls in New York State. They are located on the border between the United States and Canada between the Niagara Falls in the State of New York and

Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 3 January / February 2018 Live from Canada Fourth stop: Lake Placid, NY - stay 3 nights at the Lake Placid Inn For today I have planned a longer ride as I will cross the border to the United States and the latter will undoubtedly take some time because the green card has to be collected at US Customs (cost US $ 6). I was lucky as It took almost no time, it went super fast and actually it was dead quiet at the border in this time. Lake Placid is especially known because the Winter Olympics took place twice here, namely in 1932 and in 1980. It is located in the Adirondacks Mountains and is known for its: 46 High Peaks, the name is due to the 46 peaks of over 4,000 ft (1,219m), actually, there appeared to be less than 4,000 fter's in later measurements, but the name has been retained. It is a popular hiking area and mountaineers eldorado. in the winter it offers many winter sports activities su

The Legend Of the Flying Canoe or The Bewitched Canoe or La Chasse-Galerie - A deal with the devil brings Quebec woodcutters home for New Years Eve While watching the Canoe Race in Quebec, I learned a folklore story about the flying canoe. It’s one of those legends, myths or sagas that are so catching they will stick with you. The women in the photo must have thought the same as the Baptiste in the legend. An interesting legend put in a new jacket. The Legend. Long ago, there were a number of lonely lumberjacks working in the center of a very large forest. They worked hard, Mon Dieu, really hard! But they were lonely for the women they had left behind.  On New Years Day, it snowed so hard no work could be done. They sad in the camp and spoke longingly of their home and wives. They passed around the rum and drank toasts to the New Year. Finally Baptiste said what they were all thinking: "I wish to go home today and see my girl!"  They all agreed b

Winter Tour Eastern Canada & the State of New York - Part 2 January / February 2018 Live from Canada View from Terasse Dufferin on Hotel Chateau Frontenac Third stop: Quebec, QC - stay 3 nights at  Hotel 71  in Old Quebec I’am going to skip a detailed review from my overnight stay at Hotel Sacacomie in St. Alexis-des-Mont, although a beautiful log building, beautiful location and great spa, the hotel on its own is outdated and definitely ready for a make-over and price/quality is way out of context. From St. Alexis-des-Mont it is only 2 hours to Quebec so time to take it easy. Québec, the capital of the French-speaking province, is the only city in North America surrounded by a city wall and therefore one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the world. The historic center (‘Le Vieux Québec') is on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985.  The French atmosphere can still be felt everywhere. Quebec is in my opinion one of the most romantic cit
