Lake Powell, Utah/Arizona, USA
Het gebeurt niet vaak mensen per ongeluk iets creëren van natuurlijke schoonheid.
Het indammen van de Glen Canyon leidde tot veel commentaar en de Colorado rivier steeg tot het een na grootste water reservoir in Amerika. Maar de mystiek van dit prachtige warme blauwe meer valt niet te ontkennen. De randen van de meren worden omsloten door 90 ravijn wanden. Maar natuurlijk heeft de natuur zijn eigen merk op Lake Powell gezet met Rainbow Bridge, deze wordt beschouwd als ’s wereld grootste natuurlijke boog.

Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, USA
Helder, diep en koud, Yellowstone is een van ’s wereld meest geologisch actieve gebieden, onder het toeziend oog van Beartooth en Absaroa bergen. Meer dan 2 miljoen bezoeker per jaar trekt het park elke zomer, maar de winter is misschien we gezien als de mooiste tijd om het meer te zien.
De bubbelende geisers langs de West Thumb waterkant creert prachtig kleurvolle verschijningen in de sneeuw met stoom dat komt van het bevroren landschap.
Yellowstone is meer dan de helft van het jaar bevroren.

Flathead Lake, Montana, USA
Flathead is het grootste natuurlijke vers water meer ten westen van de Mississippie, met helder kristal water, gelegen in de Flathead Valley in the Mission Mountains in het oosten en de Salish Mountain in het westen.
Het meer beschikt over een zeer uitermate mild klimaat voor zijn noordelijke ligging. In het westen bevind zich veel fruitteelt en wijngaarden. Er gaan zelfs geruchten dat ook dit meer een monster heeft zoals in het meer van Loch Ness.
Maar de kans dat je hier wilde paarden ziet is veel groter

Crater Lake, Oregon, USA – op de te doen lijst voor juni – dan een persoonlijk verslag
Crater Lake ligt in een vulkanisch basin dat ongeveer 8.000 geleden is ontstaan toen de 3.660m hoge Mount Mazama instortte door een vulkanische uitbarsting. Regen en sneeuw hebben krater gevuld met diepblauw water. Het meer heeft een diameter van 8 km en is met zijn 589m het diepste van Amerika.
Het verdampende water wordt aangevuld door de vele sneeuw die er valt en maakt het helderste meer in de wereld.
Het meer is door zijn helderheid zeer geschikt om te duiken.
Beste bezoek tijd is van juni t/m september, alhoewel er in juni wel een weg afgesloten kan zijn.

Lake Tahoe, Californië, USA
Omgeven door de sneeuw bedekte Sierra Nevada Mountains en de vele kleuren blauw.
Lake Tahoe is het grootste berg meer in Noord Amerika en het een na diepste in Amerika.
Het meer is het hele jaar door behoorlijk koud maar door de omgeving zou je haast denken dat je in de Caribbean bent.
’s Winters kun je hier vlakbij skiën met adembenemende uitzichten over het meer.

Mono Lake, Californie, USA
Mono Lake is een zoutmeer in de Amerikaanse staat Californië, in Mono County. Het ligt tussen de Sierra Nevada en de White Mountains, ten oosten van Yosemite National Park.
Mono Lake staat bekend om de grillig gevormde zoutpilaren nabij de zuidwestelijke oever. De saliniteit (het zoutgehalte) is met 7,5% ruim tweemaal zo hoog als zeewater (3,5%).
Het meer is een zeer productief ecosysteem, en van grote betekenis voor talloze vogelsoorten die in de omgeving leven.

Lake Powell, UT/AZ
It’s not often that humans can accidentally create something of such extraordinary natural beauty. Initially, this man-made lake stirred loud outcries when Glen Canyon was dammed, and the Colorado River rose to create the second-largest reservoir in the U.S. But there’s no denying the mystical allure of this long, sinewy lake, as its warm blue waters wind through sheer red-sandstone cliffs, filling more than 90 side canyons. However, nature made her mark on the shore of one such canyon with the sandstone Rainbow Bridge, regarded as the world’s longest natural arch.

Yellowstone Lake, WY
Clear, deep, and cold, Yellowstone Lake is found in one of the world’s most geologically active areas, under the watch of the Beartooth and Absaroka mountains. More than 2 million visitors pour into the national park each summer, but winter could very well be the best time to see the lake; the bubbling geysers along the West Thumb shoreline appear as colorful cauldrons in the snow, steam rising eerily from the icy landscape. Indeed, Yellowstone Lake is typically frozen over for half the year.

Flathead Lake, MT
Flathead is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, with clean, crystalline waters cradled in the Flathead valley by the Mission Mountains to the east and the Salish Mountains to the west. The lake is blessed with an unusually mild climate for an area both so far north and inland, allowing for surrounding fruit orchards, and vineyards on its west side. There’s even a Flathead Lake Monster, which, judging by some accounts, may have a close cousin living in Loch Ness. It’s more likely, however, that you’ll spy wild horses roaming the state park (Flathead Lake Lodge is just one of the area’s dude ranches).

Crater Lake, OR
Crater Lake’s birth story is inscribed by its nearly circular six-mile diameter. It formed nearly 8,000 years ago when volcanic Mount Mazama blew its top and left a smoldering caldera that would eventually fill with rain and snowmelt. At 1,943 feet, America’s deepest lake is cut off from any incoming streams or rivers, so it remains extraordinarily clear. Visibility averages 90 to100 feet, and sunlight penetrates nearly 400 feet down, making it excellent for scuba diving. For an even more dramatic effect, two islands rise from the lake’s deep-blue surface: forested Wizard Island and the much smaller, nearly barren Phantom Ship.

Lake Tahoe, CA
It’s not hard to see why Mark Twain pronounced Lake Tahoe the “fairest picture the whole earth affords.” Ringed by the snowcapped Sierra Nevada Mountains and bathed in an Impressionist’s palette of blues, Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest (1,645 feet) in the U.S. With visibility of more than 70 feet in places, the lake’s clarity is so remarkable that—if it weren’t for the year-round chilly water—you could swear you were swimming in the Caribbean. During winter, the nearby ski runs offer exhilarating views down to the lake.

Mono Lake, CA
Amid a forbidding landscape of dusty desert, dry hills, and volcanic craters on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, Mono Lake was nearly destroyed by Los Angeles’s thirst for the waters that fed it. When the water level plummeted, it exposed eerie-looking tufa towers. (These limestone columns form underwater when calcium-rich underground springs react with the carbonate-heavy lake water.) They remain on view today, despite two decades of strict regulation to restore the water level of “California’s Dead Sea.” Yet dead is a misnomer: each spring trillions of tiny brine shrimp and alkali flies hatch in Mono’s fishless, hypersaline water (three times saltier than the ocean), nourishing millions of birds at one of North America’s most important migratory stops.
