From my base in Pertisau, I visited Nature Park Karwendel, a valley that splits into 2 accessible valleys.
The road into the Park is a toll road for cars but free for bikers and hikers.
The Nostalgic Bus into the Park
The Nostalgic bus brings you from the village of Pertisau, with several stops, to the Gramaialm lying in the left fork of the park.
Here you find Hotel & Restaurant Gramai ****S and a small cheese store. Be prepared for a lot of visitors, even today on a Tuesday and outside the holiday season it was very very crowded.
Kasalm
Several hikes start at this point but are all marked red thus middle range, also climbing trails are found here. An easier hike brings you to a waterfall but unfortunately that has dried up currently.
Gramaialm
The other possibility for not driving yourself is the Hüttenexpress, it brings you from the village of Pertisau into the Gern Valley where you find several restaurant such as Alpen-Gasthof Gern Alm, Alpen-Gasthof Pletzach Alm and Jausenstation Feil-Alm, the latter can only be reached by foot or mountainbike.
Gernalm
Hiking trails are found throughout the valleys and you have a chance to see chamois and ibex high up on the rocks, marmots, deer and hares, while birds of prey such as eagles, glide through the air.
Some base information about the park.
The Nature Park Karwendel starts on the western shore of Lake Achen. It is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the northern Alps, comprising over 920 km2 and stretching across to Bavaria.
Of the 920 km2, 727 km2 lies in Austria and the rest in Bavaria
From the valley at 591m to 2,749m (Birkkarspitze) it contains protected areas, landscape conservation areas and sanctuaries which are protected under the Tirolean Nature Conservation Act since 1928 and became part of the Natura 2000 in 1995.
Natura 2000 is a European network of protected natural areas of the Member States of the European Union. This network is the cornerstone of EU policy for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. Natura 2000 is not only intended to protect areas (biotopes), but also contributes to the protection of species (and their habitats).

Natuurpark Karwendel, Tirol, Oostenrijk
Van jachtgebied van keizer Maximillian tot het grootste natuurreservaat in Oostenrijk.
Vanuit mijn basis in Pertisau bezocht ik het Natuurpark Karwendel, een vallei die zich splitst in 2 toegankelijke valleien.
De weg naar het park is een tolweg voor auto's, maar gratis voor fietsers en wandelaars.
De Nostalgische bus brengt je vanuit het dorp Pertisau, met verschillende tussenstops, naar de Gramaialm in de linkeraftakking van het park.
Hier vind je Hotel & Restaurant Gramai **** S en een kleine kaaswinkel. Wees voorbereid op veel bezoekers, zelfs vandaag op een dinsdag en buiten het vakantieseizoen was het erg druk.
Verschillende wandelingen beginnen op dit punt maar zijn allemaal rood gemarkeerd dus gemiddeld volgens de beoordeling, ook klimroutes zijn hier te vinden. Een gemakkelijkere wandeling brengt je naar een waterval maar die is helaas op het moment opgedroogd.
De andere mogelijkheid, als je niet zelf wilt rijden, is de Hüttenexpress deze brengt je van het dorp Pertisau naar de Gernvallei waar je verschillende restaurants vindt, zoals Alpen-Gasthof Gern Alm, Alpen-Gasthof Pletzach Alm en Jausenstation Feil-Alm, de laatste is alleen te voet of met de mountainbike bereikbaar.
Er zijn vele wandelpaden te vinden in de valleien en je hebt een kans om gemzen en steenbokken hoog op de rotsen te zien, marmotten, herten en hazen, terwijl roofvogels zoals adelaars door de lucht glijden.
Wat basisinformatie over het park.
Het natuurpark Karwendel begint aan de westelijke oever van het Achenmeer. Het is het grootste aaneengesloten natuurgebied in de noordalpen, dat meer dan 920 km2 beslaat en zich uitstrekt tot aan Beieren.
Van de 920 km2 ligt 727 km2 in Oostenrijk en de rest in Beieren
Van de vallei op 591m tot 2.749m (Birkkarspitze) bevat het beschermde gebieden, landschapsbehoudsgebieden die sinds 1928 beschermd worden door de Tiroler natuurbeschermingswet en een onderdeel werden van het Natura 2000-gebied in 1995.
Natura 2000 is een Europees netwerk van beschermde natuurgebieden van de lidstaten van de Europese Unie. Dit netwerk is de hoeksteen van het EU-beleid voor het behoud en herstel van biodiversiteit. Natura 2000 is niet alleen bedoeld om gebieden (biotopen) te beschermen, maar draagt ook bij aan de bescherming van soorten (en hun leefgebied).
