I found a new challenge in the Malta Hochalmstraße, a really beautiful mountain road. I would say one with an attitude.
The road starts at the Village of Gmünd which is absolutely worth a visit, especially the small streets where artists show there skills by hanging their work on lines high above street-level.

At an altitude of 1,933 m is the highest dam wall (no less than 200m high and 626m long) of Austria, called the Kölnbrein Dam. Built between 1971 and 1979.
The 14.4 km long Malta Hochalmstraße takes you to an altitude of 1,933 m, the road is characterized by tunnels and hairpins bends and is popular with two and four wheeled traffic.
At the narrowest points, two traffic lights ensure the safety of the visitors, the first one has a maximum waiting time of 22 minutes. They are both indicated with a countdown clock so you are able to get out the car but if traffic is low the waiting time will quickly be lowered.
The road is open from the beginning of May until the end of October.

Becaise of the numerous waterfalls along the road, the Malta Valley got nicknamed "Valley of the Falling Water".
When you have conquered the hairpins bends, traffic lights and all the impressions of the waterfalls, you can park your car in the parking lot at the information building.

If the hikes do not offer you enough excitement you can go for a jump in the deep.
Daredevils can once a year take the leap of 165m from the highest dam in Austria during legendary Bungee Jump Weekenden.
The first following possibilities are:
Saturday - August 04, 2018: 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday - August 05, 2018: 9 am to 5 pm
Saturday - August 11, 2018: 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday - August 12, 2018: 9 am to 5 pm

The Airwalk is a grid and glass surface and offers an unobstructed view of 200m in depth but also offers a beautiful view of the high alpine area of Hohe Tauern National Park.

Ik vond een nieuwe uitdaging in de Malta Hochalmstraße, een werkelijk prachtige bergweg. Eentje met karakter zou ik zeggen.
De weg begint bij het dorp Gmünd en is absoluut een bezoek waard, vooral de kleine straatjes waar kunstenaars hun vaardigheden tonen door hun werk op te hangen aan lijnen hoog boven straatniveau.
Op een hoogte van 1.933 m ligt de hoogste stuwdam muur (maar liefst 200m hoog en 626m lang) van Oostenrijk, genaamd de Kölnbrein Dam. Gebouwd tussen 1971 en 1979.
De 14,4 km lange Malta Hochalmstraße brengt je naar een hoogte van 1.933 m, de weg wordt gekenmerkt door tunnels en haarspeldbochten en is populair bij twee- en vierwielers.
Op de smalste punten zorgen twee verkeerslichten voor de veiligheid van de bezoekers, de eerste heeft een maximale wachttijd van 22 minuten. Ze zijn beide aangegeven met een klok, zodat u uit de auto kunt stappen, maar als er niet veel verkeer is, wordt de wachttijd soms snel verlaagd.
De weg is geopend van begin mei tot eind oktober.
De talrijke watervallen langs de weg, heeft het Maltadal de bijnaam "Vallei van het Vallende Water" bezorgd.
Wanneer je de haarspeldbochten, verkeerslichten en alle indrukken van de watervallen hebt overwonnen, kun je je auto parkeren op de parkeerplaats bij het informatiecentrum.
Niet alleen geïnteresseerd in buitenkant van de dam?
Neem dan een kijkje in de hoogste dam van Oostenrijk.
Verbund, de beheerder van meerdere stuwmeren, biedt de mogelijkheid om met een excursie mee te gaan door de dam.Eten, Drinken & Slapen.
Een bijzonderheid bij de Kölnbrein Dam is het Berghotel Malta, dit 3 sterren hotel is de perfecte uitvalsbasis om het stuwmeer te verkennen.
En mocht je meer van deze unieke plek willen genieten, kun je hier natuurlijk een hapje eten en uiteraard blijven slapen om te genieten van de stilte en sterren.
Niet alleen het Berghotel is hier te vinden met zijn zonneterras maar ook berghutten bevinden zich in het National Park Hoch Tauern. Sommige direct langs de weg en andere weer te bereiken door een wandeling.

Mochten de wandelingen je niet genoeg (in)spanning bieden dan kun je hier terecht voor een sprong in het diepe.
Waaghalzen kunnen één keer per jaar de sprong van 165m wagen van de hoogste dam van Oostenrijk tijdens legendarische Bungee Jump Weekenden.

En mocht je dit te griezelig vinden maar wil je toch iets meer doen dan in de zon zitten of gewoon wandelen, kun je terecht op de “Airwalk”.
De Airwalk is een rooster en glazen oppervlakte waar je op kan staan en biedt een vrij uitzicht van 200m de diepte in maar biedt ook een prachtig uitzicht op het hoogalpen gebied van National Park Hohe Tauern.
