Badlands National Park, with it’s 1,054,324 visitors in 2017 it was the busiest year of the park since 2000, according to a National Park Service release.
It is not the park that you will choose for your first visit to North America if you come from Europe.
But worth a visit if you are in the area, the nearest place with a direct flight from Amsterdam is Minneapolis and it is more than 800 km away.
The best option, I think, is a flight to Denver via Detroit, then it is still 600 km to the Badlands NP, but you have more options to combine it into a great trip. See my tip at the end of my blog.
Facts
Badlands National Park encompasses 244,000 acres and lies in the Southwestern part of South Dakota in the United States of America.
Surrounded by grassy prairies, the park is the largest of its kind and is typified by rocky eroded pinnacles and buttes that suddenly appear on the flat landscape. Due to a lack of water and the rugged terrain, Sioux Indians found travel in the area difficult, if not impassable, and gave the area its name, “badlands.” Very cold winters and hot summers characterize the region, and just 16 inches of rain fall per year.
Movies such as Dances with Wolves (1990) and Thunderheart (1992) were partially filmed in Badlands National Park.
Park Founders
President Franklin Roosevelt officially proclaimed and founded the park as a national monument in 1939 and became a national park in 1978. But the road to this started well before 1939. The South Dakota legislature recognized the area as early as 1909 as one to be preserved, but it was not until two men joined forces in the 1920s that action occurred, leading to its founding. Senator Peter Norbeck from South Dakota and local homesteader Ben Millard worked tirelessly and received approval to preserve the area as a national monument in 1929. Norbeck died three years before Badlands was officially designated a national monument.
Human History
The Badlands have been inhabited by various Indian tribes. The first tribes lived in sheltered valleys where sufficient water and wildlife were available throughout the year. Nowadays, the remains of their campfires, arrows and other tools are found by erosion.
Later the Lakota and the Arikara lived here, whose descendants live in the current North Dakota, after the Sioux drove them from South Dakota.
By the end of the 19th century, Americans from the government under the Homestead Act were given land to build a farm.
As a result, the Indians were only allowed to live in specially designated reservations.
In the winter of 1890, the Indian Prophet Wovoka predicted that the whites would disappear and they would get their land back if they performed the Ghost Dance. They wore clothes that bullets could not pass through. This eventually led to the Bloodbath of Wounded Knee, in which 150 Indians died. Wounded Knee is not within the boundaries of Badlands National Park. It is located approximately 45 miles (72 km) south of the park on Pine Ridge Reservation.
Geology
Many years ago, the Badlands looked much like the rolling grasslands that surround the area today. 500,000 years ago, water began to erode the ground, revealing six layers of geologic history dating million of years ago. The resulting peaks, buttes and pinnacles exposed gray, yellow and red layers, creating colorful images.
Features
The area is great for fossil hunters, and paleontologists continue to discover fauna and flora of the past. The area reveals life as it used to be in North America, including discoveries like the saber-toothed cat. Many animals inhabit the park today, including bison and smaller mammals like coyotes, prairie dogs, bobcats and foxes. Rattlesnakes hide in the cooler crevices.
I made a trip in 2011 including the Badlands. Since I had visited the USA several times, I thought it would be time to visit South Dakota, but I admit it is a journey of more than average length.

It was a really great trip, but as said it was a 24-day trip, so if you have the time for such a trip, it's a great experience.
I had a funny encounter with a girl at the reception of my hotel in Cheyenne, she literally asked me and I quote: What the heck do you do in Cheyenne? Cheyenne of all places!
It was just easy on the route of the trip.
One more thing, lodging within the park is pretty basic. I found accommodation in Wall, SD 6 miles (10 km) north of the Badlands Pinnacles Entrance of the park.

Het is niet het park dat je zult uitkiezen voor je eerste bezoek aan Noord-Amerika als je uit Europa komt.
Maar wel een bezoekje waard als je in de omgeving bent, de dichtstbijzijnde plaats met een directe vlucht vanuit Amsterdam is Minneapolis en het ligt meer dan 800 km verderop.
De beste optie, volgens mij, is een vlucht naar Denver via Detroit, dan is het nog steeds 600 km naar het Badlands NP, maar je hebt meer mogelijkheden om het te combineren tot een geweldige reis. Zie mijn tip aan het einde van mijn blog.
Feiten
Badlands National Park omvat 244.000 hectare en ligt in het zuidwestelijke deel van South Dakota in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika.
Omringd door grazige weiden, is het park het grootste in zijn soort en wordt gekenmerkt door rotsachtige geërodeerde “Pinnacles”(puntige zandsteen formaties) en “Buttes”(platte zandsteen formaties) die plotseling in het vlakke landschap verschijnen. Vanwege een gebrek aan water en het ruige terrein vonden Sioux-indianen reizen in het gebied moeilijk, zo niet onbegaanbaar, en gaven het gebied de naam 'badlands'. Zeer koude winters en hete zomers kenmerken de regio, en er valt slechts 16 centimeter regen per jaar.
Films zoals Dances with Wolves (1990) en Thunderheart (1992) werden gedeeltelijk gefilmd in Badlands National Park.

Kenmerken
Het gebied is geweldig voor fossielenjagers, en paleontologen blijven fauna en flora van het verleden ontdekken. Het gebied onthult het leven zoals het vroeger in Noord-Amerika was, inclusief ontdekkingen zoals de sabeltandkat. Veel dieren leven tegenwoordig in het park, waaronder bizons en kleinere zoogdieren zoals coyotes, prairiehonden, bobcats en vossen. Ratelslangen verstoppen zich in de koelere spleten.
Mijn tip & opmerkingen
Ik maakte in 2011 een reis inclusief de Badlands. Aangezien ik al verschillende keren de VS had bezocht, vond ik het tijd worden om South Dakota te bezoeken, maar ik geef toe dat het een reis is met een meer dan gemiddelde lengte.

Het was echt een geweldige reis, maar zoals gezegd was het een 24-daagse reis, dus als je de tijd hebt voor zo'n reis, is het een geweldige ervaring.
Ik had een grappige ontmoeting met een meisje bij de receptie van mijn hotel in Cheyenne, ze vroeg me letterlijk en ik citeer: Wat doe je in Cheyenne? Cheyenne van alle plaatsen!
Het lag gewoon makkelijk op de route van de trip.
Nog een ding, overnachten in het park is vrij eenvoudig. Ik vond accommodatie in Wall, SD 6 mijl (10 km) ten noorden van de Badlands Pinnacles Entrance van het park.
Ik hoop dat je tijd hebt om dit bijzondere National Park te bezoeken/ontdekken.
