Canyonlands National Park, UTAH Not the Most Visited Park of UTAH but Oh zo Amazing.

Niet het Meest Bezochte Park van UTAH maar Oh zo Verbazingwekkend.

UTAH or The Beehive State.

The state of Utah is home of 5 national parks and although Canyonlands National Park is Utah’s largest national park with 527 square miles, it is also the less visited park of the state.

The park is split into three districts: 

• Island in the Sky 40 min northeast from Moab,
• The Needles 1.20u south of Moab and 
• The Maze is not that easy to be reached and will take you 5.30u from Moab so not fit for a day-trip. 

The Colorado- and Green River literarily separate the districts. Each of the districts shares a desert atmosphere but do have their own landscapes with canyons, mesas, arches, buttes and spires.

Because there are no bridges over the two rivers, there are no roads that lead from one to the other district. 

More information of the park can either be found on the above website or via the website from Visit Utah. As the districts are open 24/7 and 365 days a year, during the winter some facilities may be closed, they have their own visitor center and the opening hours differ.

The park’s website has suggested itineraries in Island In the Sky and The Needles depending on the amount of time you have to spend, which are very helpful.

During my visit a couple of years ago, I visited the Island in the Sky district as its the easiest to access.

It offers enough short and longer hikes (I’m not really a backcountry hiker which better can be done in The Needles) and a lot of breathtaking viewpoints.

I combined Island in the Sky with a visit to Dead Horse Point State Park that lies just before the entrance and therefor my first stop.
The drive into the park is easy and brings you along several stop and view points, short educational walks and the big bonus is the Dead Horse Point Overlook. From the overlook the view is breathtaking, high on the cliffs of the outlook your view is endless and lies above the gooseneck of the Colorado River below. In the back you can see the Shafer Basin.

According the legend, the cowboys rounded up the wild mustangs at this point and used it as natural corral which they closed with bushes and branches. 

About seven miles of hiking trails start here and connecting eight different overlooks.  

All trails are relatively easy in nature, traversing the mesa top with minimal elevation gain or loss. Nevertheless, sturdy boots are highly recommended. Most popular trail is the overlook trail.

After my visit of Dead Horse Point I continued my drive toward Island in the Sky Visitor Center, but 1 mi (1.6 km) before the center, you find the entrance to the Shafer Trail and the Shafer Trail Overlook.

About the Trail.
This trail is an absolute awesome 4x4wheel dirt road and well-maintained (weather depending) for the first 5.3 mi (8.4 km). To drive the road, you will need a valid parks pass.

The road zigzags down towards the bottom of the canyon, you don’t realize how much you decent unless the next switchback and look into the depth of the canyon.

Some go down and return, others continue at the crossing towards Moab via the Potash Road (approx 13 mi/  21 km), others continue on the White Rim Road which is a 100 mi (160 km) loop road.

This road demands a high clearance 4x4wheel, not for the first part as its well maintained but to continue on the Potash- or White Road it’s a must as the road is with rocks, rutted spots, pieces of missing road, and a riverbed or two you need to drive on, not cross, but into and along until you reach a trail again.

The road demands patience, no real driving skills are demanded for the first part just common sense, the rest asks for more experience so don’t take it too light.

The Shafer Trail -> Potash Road to Moab will take between 2-3 hours depending how often you stop.

The Shafer Trail -> White Rim Road will take between 10-11 hours and require some specifics to prepare for, so check via this link for more details and tips. 

And if this is all a bit too much to do on your own, there are local outfitters who offer more then enough adventures.

Holeman Spring Overlook, Island in the Sky

If you just want to go for a drive, the Island in the Sky offers a 34 mi (54km) scenic drive and offers the best of the park, with lookouts rising 1.000 ft (300m) above the surrounding area.

I did not do the following adventures, but they can be done at Canyonlands National Park:

• Whitewater rafting
• More 4x4 roads to be driven in The Needles and The Maze districts
• Ride a Bike, with the White Rim Road being the most popular off road and The Maze offers more technical roads. But also the paved roads throughout the park are a good way to bike.
• Stargazing, being in the middle of nowhere the sky is pitch black to look up and see so many stars you’ve never seen. The park has been designated as Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Park in 2015. 

Where to stay.

Of course you can stay in the park, offering 2 options; back-country camping and camping at the regular campgrounds but that’s not my kind of cookie so I chose to stay in Moab. I stayed some 14 mi (22km) outside Moab along the Scenic Highway 128 in the Red Cliffs Lodge, a great lodge lying on the banks of the Colorado River and offers several kind of accommodations. The restaurant offers a great meal and a sundeck with great view on the surrounding red-rocks. I can highly recommend this lodge

And if you want to be closer to The Needles district you can stay in Monticello.

De Staat Utah is thuis van 5 nationale parken en hoewel Canyonlands National Park het grootste nationale park van Utah is met 1474 km2, is het ook het minst bezochte park van de staat.

Het park is opgedeeld in drie districten: 

• Island in the Sky 40 min. ten noordoosten van Moab, 
• The Needles 1.20u ten zuiden van Moab en 
• The Maze is niet zo gemakkelijk te bereiken en duurt 5.30u vanuit Moab dus niet geschikt voor een dag- reis. 

De Colorado- en Green River scheiden letterlijk de districten. Elk district heeft een woestijnachtige atmosfeer maar heeft zijn eigen landschappen met canyons, mesa's, bogen en torens. Omdat er geen bruggen over de twee rivieren zijn, zijn er geen wegen die van het ene naar het andere district leiden. 

Meer informatie over het park is te vinden op de bovenstaande website of via de website van Visit Utah. Omdat de districten 24 uur per dag, 7 dagen per week en 365 dagen per jaar geopend zijn, in de winter kunnen sommige voorzieningen gesloten zijn, hebben ze een eigen bezoekerscentrum met verschillende openingstijden. Informatie is hier te vinden. 

De website van het park biedt trip ideeën in Island In the Sky en The Needles, afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid tijd die je moet doorbrengen, wat erg handig is. 

Tijdens mijn bezoek een paar jaar geleden, bezocht ik het Island in the Sky district omdat het het gemakkelijkst te bereiken is, biedt voldoende korte en langere wandelingen (ik ben niet echt een back-country-wandelaar en kan beter worden gedaan in The Needles) en een veel adembenemende uitzichtpunten. 

Ik combineerde Island in the Sky met een bezoek aan Dead Horse Point State Park dat vlak voor de ingang ligt en was daarom mijn eerste stop. De rit door het park is eenvoudig en brengt je langs verschillende stop- en uitzichtpunten, korte educatieve wandelingen en de grote bonus is de Dead Horse Point Overlook. Vanaf hier is het uitzicht adembenemend, hoog op de kliffen is je uitzicht eindeloos en ligt boven de “gooseneck / zwanennek” van de Colorado rivier die beneden stroomt.
Op de achtergrond zie je het Shafer Basin.

Volgens de legende dreven de cowboys op dit punt de wilde mustangs bij elkaar en gebruikten het als een natuurlijke kraal die ze sloten met struiken en takken. 

Ongeveer 11 km aan wandelpaden beginnen hier en verbinden acht verschillende uitzichtpunten. Alle routes zijn relatief eenvoudig van aard en lopen over de rand met een minimale hoogtewinst of -verlies. Niettemin zijn stevige schoenen ten zeerste aanbevolen. Het meeste populaire wandelpad ligt bij het einde. 

Na mijn bezoek aan Dead Horse Point ging ik verder naar het bezoekerscentrum Island in the Sky, maar 1,6 kilometer voordat je bij de ingang bent vind je de Shafer Trail en de Shafer Trail Overlook.

Over de route. 

Deze route is een absoluut geweldig 4x4wheel onverharde weg en goed onderhouden (weer afhankelijk) voor de eerste 8.4 km. Om de weg te rijden, heb je een geldige park pas nodig.

De weg zigzagt naar beneden naar de bodem van de kloof, je realiseert je niet hoeveel je afgedaald bent, tot de volgende bocht en kijkt in de diepte van de kloof. 

Sommigen dalen af en keren terug, anderen gaan verder op de kruising richting Moab via de Potash Road (ongeveer 21 km), anderen gaan verder op de White Rim Road, een rondweg van 160 km.

Deze weg vereist een 4,4-wiel met hoge wielophanging, niet voor het eerste deel omdat deze goed onderhouden is, maar om verder te gaan op de Potash- of White Road is het een must, want de weg heeft rotsen, gaten, ontbrekende stukken weg en één of twee rivierbedding waar je moet rijden, niet oversteken, maar in en langs totdat je weer een pad bereikt. 

De weg vereist geduld en een beetje rijvaardigheid voor het eerste deel, de rest vraagt om meer ervaring dus neem het niet te licht.

De Shafer Trail -> Potash Road naar Moab duurt 2-3 uur, afhankelijk van hoe vaak je stopt. 

De Shafer Trail -> White Rim Road duurt tussen 10-11 uur en heeft een aantal specifieke zaken waar je je op moet voorbereiden, dus kijk via deze link voor meer details en tips. 

En als dit allemaal een beetje te veel is om zelfstandig te doen, zijn er lokale bedrijven die meer dan genoeg avonturen aanbieden. 

Als je gewoon een ritje wilt maken, biedt het Island in the Sky een 54 kilometer lange rit door het park en biedt het beste van het park, met uitzichten die 300 meter boven de omgeving uitstijgen. 

Ik ging niet voor de volgende avonturen, maar ze zijn mogelijk in Canyonlands National Park: 

• Wildwatervaren
• Meer 4x4-wegen om te rijden in de districten The Needles en The Maze 
• Fietsen met de White Rim Road als de meest populaire off-road en The Maze biedt meer technische wegen. Maar ook de verharde wegen door het park zijn een goed alternatief om te fietsen. 
• Sterrenkijken, in het midden van nergens, waar de hemel pikdonker is als je naar boven kijkt en zoveel sterren ziet zoals die je nog nooit hebt gezien. Het park is in 2015 uitgeroepen tot Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Park. 

Waar te verblijven. 

Natuurlijk kun je in het park blijven, met 2 opties; back-country kamperen en kamperen op de reguliere campings maar dat is niet iets voor mij dus koos ik ervoor om in Moab te blijven. Ik verbleef ongeveer 22 kilometer buiten Moab langs de Scenic Highway 128 in de Red Cliffs Lodge, een grote lodge aan de oevers van de Colorado-rivier en biedt verschillende soorten accommodaties. Het restaurant biedt een geweldige maaltijd en een zonnedek met prachtig uitzicht op de omliggende rode rotsen. Dus ik kan deze lodge zeer aanbevelen.

U kunt contact opnemen met Visit Moab voor andere accommodaties en restaurants. En als je dichter bij de The Needles wilt verblijven, kun je dat in Monticello doen.
