I call myself blessed that I have been able to spend many holidays in Canada, in every season. Despite that, I still have not seen a lot what this beautiful country has to offer, and I am afraid that I will never succeed.
Yet I would like to summarize this beautiful country for you, some may now think: yes, I have read this so many times before and that will undoubtedly be so, but there will be enough people who have never been to this beautiful country and maybe benefit from this blog. After all, it is not something you do every day.
Canada consists of 10 Provinces:
Alberta (AB), British Columbia (BC), Manitoba, New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario (ON), Prince Edward Island, Quebec (QC) and Saskatchewan
and 3 Territories:
Northwest Territories (NWT), Nunavut and YukoN(YT).
Contradictions at the top: from the prairies in the east to the rugged mountains in the west. From small villages with only one street to big cities like Edmonton and Calgary. Home to Banff National Park and Jasper National Park with their many attractions and their respective ski areas
British Columbia.
This province lies in western Canada. Nature is very diverse and varies from untouched rain forests along the coast to the imposing Rocky Mountains with glacial lakes and rivers. The bustling Vancouver opposite to small vineyards and fruit orchids in the heart of BC.
Home to no less than 7 National Parks such as YOHO National Park and Mount Revelstoke National Park. And let's not forget Vancouver Island with its large Douglas Fir trees.
New Brunswick.
Located at sea in eastern Canada and is the only province that is officially bilingual, English-French. It is one of the 3 Maritime Provinces, with Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It has an impressive landscape with many inland forests and rugged rocks with deep cliffs on the coast.
Ontario.
Rich of countless lakes, rolling hills, world cities and stretched forest and those, during the Indian Summer/Fall Foliage, change into a coloured painting of yellow and red. Rich nature as cultural wonders such as the impressive Niagara Falls to the world cultural heritage recognized Rideau Canal in Ottawa, the capital. Also Algonquin National Park and the 1000 Islands belong to this beautiful province
Quebec.
The emphasis in this largest province of Canada is French. The combination of cosy cities such as Montreal and Quebec City with beautiful nature, such as Saguenay’s Fjord National Park and Gaspé Peninsula. The Québécois (pronounced as Kebekwa) love the good life and conviviality. Recommendable are the Saint Lawrence River with its whales and belugas and the deep forests and the lovely valleys. But one should not be forgotten the beautiful Chutes of Montmorency, an impressive waterfall just outside Quebec City.
Northwest Territories.
Unknown is unloved but Northwest Territories with its untouched nature offers much for the adventurous traveller! A place where reindeer graze on vast plains, where the Northern Lights dances in the clear night sky (only in the wintertime) and where you can see the Arctic Circle, where you cross via the Dempster Highway on the way to the city of Inuvik.
Yukon.
Another one in the category unknown is unloved. The Yukon in northwest Canada is pristine and sparsely populated, there are more animals here than humans and possess unprecedented natural beauty. Traveling through The Yukon brings out the ultimate adventurous feeling. Visit Kluane National Park with the highest mountain Mt. Logan and get to the mighty Dempster Highway ( 375 kilometres of dirt road). Get to know the authentic Gold Rush atmosphere in places like Dawson City and Whitehorse!
Below I will list my travel itineraries and after that you come across general matters that might help if you decide to go to Canada.
My Itineraries/Road Trips – all created by myself and some rather unique.
Short summary of Canada.

Since the Indians were the first inhabitants of this land, and they called it Kanata. Kanata means settlement. Also, the Inuit are among the first inhabitants of Canada, the Inuit is the name by which the Eskimos from Greenland and Canada refer to themselves.
From the 15th and 16th century it was explored and colonized by European, mainly English and French. The colony of New France was conquered by the English in 1873. In 1931 Canada gained more autonomy within the British Empire and became independent of the United Kingdom in 1982 through the Canada Act.
The capital of Canada is Ottawa in the province of Ontario.
Major cities include:

To the south are the United States of America, along this border for a stretch of 200 Kilometers live most residents of Canada.
To the west lies the American State Alaska and to the north-east lies Greenland.
Who flies from Europe to the west coast of Canada, flies for a long time over the mainland of Canada.
Canada is basically bilingual, but only in Province of Quebec is mainly French spoken, especially in smaller places it is difficult to speak in English but in Quebec City everyone speaks English even though they will always start in French.
Weather and Climate and Best Travel Time.
East and west coasts have a maritime climate whose west coast is temperate. Northern part of Canada has a polar climate and the rest a continental climate. For all the Northern part has great influence on the winter weather.
What is the best travel time? I think that is different for everyone and depends on what you are looking for.
Credit Card.
Ik mag mijzelf gezegend noemen dat ik veel vakanties in Canada heb kunnen door brengen, eigenlijk in elk jaargetijde. Ondanks dat, heb ik nog bij lange na niet gezien wat dit mooie land te bieden heeft en ik ben bang dat me dat nooit gaat lukken.
Toch wil ik voor jullie dit prachtige land een beetje samenvatten, sommige zullen nu misschien denken: ja dit heb ik al zo vaak gelezen en dat zal ook ongetwijfeld zo zijn maar er zullen genoeg mensen zijn die nog nooit in dit mooie land zijn geweest en misschien baat hebben bij dit blog.
Het is tenslotte niet iets wat je alledag doet.!
Canada bestaat uit 10 Provincies:

Hieronder zal ik mijn reisschema's vermelden en daarna kom je algemene zaken tegen die van pas kunnen komen als je besluit naar Canada te gaan.
1st Time Canada - 16 dgn, mijn allereerste vakantie in Canada (Brits-Columbia & Alberta) en wat een indrukwekkend avontuur was dat. En wat was dat een gedoe zonder internet.
West Canada inclusief Vancouver Island - 16 dagen, net even anders en inclusief het mooie Vancouver Island en de Inside Passage.
Oost Canada inclusief Niagara Watervallen - 21 dagen, na 2 keer West Canada gekozen voor de Oostkust (Ontario en Quebec) in combinatie met New York State en de Niagara Watervallen.
Yukon in combinatie met Alaska -21 dagen, de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en gekozen voor de Yukon, Northwest Territories in combinatie met Alaska
Beren bij Knight Inlet Lodge -22 dagen, niet veel kilometers maar wel een fantastische trip naar een drijvend hotel en op zoek naar orka’s bij Telegraph Cove.
Alberta & Brits-Columbia -23 dagen, beetje het bekende rondje maar zeer relaxt en ook een verblijf op een paardenranch.
Take it Slow, Alberta & Brits-Columbia in combinatie Amerika – 20 dagen, Zeer relaxt door een prachtige natuur in combinatie met Montana (Glacier National Park) en Idaho.
Quebec & de Atlantische kust– 21 dagen, iets wat je niet gauw aan denkt maar de Atlantische kust en de Gaspésie zijn super mooi en zeker in de herfst.
Winter in Jasper - 10 dagen, voor de winterliefhebber een korte rondreis door Alberta
Winter in Oost Canada – 19 dagen, een bitterkoude 19 daagse rondreis door Ontario, Quebec en New York State. Een waar avontuur.
Ontdek West Canada per Boot, Auto en Trein, een bijzondere manier om West Canada te ontdekken.
Kort samenvatting van Canada.
Canada is na Rusland, het grootste land van de wereld en ligt in Noord-Amerika.
Aangezien de indianen de eerste inwoners van dit land waren, komt de naam Kanata dan ook uit de indianen taal. Kanata betekent nederzetting. Ook de Inuit behoren tot de eerste bewoners van Canada, de Inuit is de naam waarmee de Eskimo’s uit Groenland en Canada zichzelf aanduiden.
Vanaf de 15e en 16e eeuw werd het door Europeanen, hoofdzakelijk Engelsen en Fransen, verkend en gekoloniseerd. De kolonie Nieuw-Frankrijk werd door de Engelsen veroverd in 1873. In 1931 kreeg Canada meer autonomie binnen het Britse Rijk en werd door middel van de Canada Act in 1982 onafhankelijk van het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Tot de grotere steden behoren:

In het zuiden liggen de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, het is dan ook aan deze grens, dat in een strook van 200 kilometer de meeste inwoners van Canada wonen.
In het westen ligt de Amerikaanse staat Alaska en ten noordoosten ligt Groenland.
Wie vanuit Europa naar de Westkust van Canada vliegt, vliegt heel lang over het vasteland van Canada.
Canada is in principe tweetalig maar alleen in Provincie Quebec wordt hoofdzakelijk Frans gesproken, zeker in de kleinere plaatsen is het lastig om in het Engels uit te voeten te kunnen maar in Quebec City spreekt iedereen Engels ook al zullen ze altijd in het Frans starten.
Weer en Klimaat en Beste Reistijd. Oost- en Westkust hebben een zeeklimaat waarvan de westkust gematigd is. Het noordelijk deel van Canada heeft een pool-klimaat en de rest een landklimaat. Vooral het Noordelijk deel heeft grote invloed op het winterweer.
Ach wat is beste reistijd? Ik denk dat dat voor iedereen verschillend is en afhankelijk wat je zoekt.
Mei t/m oktober zijn de beste tijden als je de kou wilt mijden en December t/m maart zijn er voor de wintersportliefhebber. Juli en augustus zijn de drukste maanden vooral in de Nationale Parken.
Reisdocumenten.Een geldig paspoort dat bij vertrek uit Canada nog geldig is. Ikzelf hou altijd 3 maanden aan.
Sinds 2016 heb je ook eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) toestemming nodig als je Canada in komt per vliegtuig.
Dit formulier is heel makkelijk zelf te regelen via de website van de Governmentof Canada, kosten CAD $ 7 (op de koers van 12/3/2018 omgerekend € 4.45) en je hebt een creditkaart nodig. De toestemming heb je binnen een aantal minuten in je mailbox en deze toestemming wordt gekoppeld aan je paspoort en is 5 jaar geldig met een max van 6 maanden. Een nieuw paspoort betekent nieuwe eTA aanvragen want verlengen of wijzigen is niet mogelijk.
Vergeet je je eTA toestemming aan te vragen dan kom je simpelweg niet met je vlucht mee en al helemaal Canada niet in.
Geld en Bankzaken.De valuta waar mee betaald wordt is de Canadese Dollar (CAD). De actuele wisselkoersen kun je vinden op de website van Wisselkoers.nl Canadese Dollars zijn te bestellen bij je eigen bank of GWKTravelex, maar ook heel eenvoudig aan te schaffen op Schiphol Airport bij bv AbnAmro of GWK. Ik zelf doe altijd op de laatste manier en dat bevalt prima.
TIP: vraag kleine coupures want CAD $ 100 en zelfs CAD $ 50 worden niet aangenomen, simpelweg omdat ze er niet van terug hebben.
Zonder een creditkaart kom je nergens in Canada, want deze kaart wordt voor nagenoeg alles als onderpand gevraagd.
Een auto huren is zonder creditkaart nagenoeg onmogelijk en als ze het wel willen accepteren zul je een fix cash bedrag moeten achterlaten voor eventueel diefstal of schade.
Hotels gebruiken het om een “pre-autorisatie” (voorreservering) aan te vragen voor eventuele kosten die je maakt in restaurant of bar of schade aanbrengt aan de kamer.
Betalen in een supermarkt of winkel met je gewone pinpas (debet-card) gaat je zeker niet lukken want er worden geen buitenlandse pinpassen geaccepteerd dus betalen doe je met je creditkaart.
Pinnen bij een automaat (ATM) brengt kosten met zich mee en zal zo rond de CAD$ 3.50 liggen. Met je creditkaart kun je overal pinnen en met de pinpas (debet-card) alleen bij ATM’s waar een maestro logo staat aangegeven.
TIP: aangezien alle pre-autorisaties die de hotels op je creditkaart doen, heb je een behoorlijk limiet nodig op je creditkaart. Dit kun je doen door je limiet te verhogen indien mogelijk of door geld te storten op de creditkaart. Deze pre-autorisatie kan soms behoorlijk lang openblijven staan maar verdwijnen in principe weer na 30 dagen. Zo staan er van mijn vakantie in jan/febr nog steeds bedragen gereserveerd en dat is best lastig als je je kaart nodig hebt.
Aankopen, Fooien, Tanken, Drank, Boodschappen, Elektriciteit, Telefonie & Internet.
De Sales Tax in Canada en deze wisselt per provincie is een naar gebeuren. Op het prijskaartje staat de basisprijs van het aan te schaffen artikel en daarboven op komt bij de kassa de sales tax.
Dus dat is altijd weer even wennen als je denkt iets goedkoops te hebben gekocht. Ook in restaurants komt er nog de nodige kosten bovenop. En dan is dit nog zonder fooi.
Fooien in Canada gaan heel anders dan in Nederland. De basissalarissen in Canada zijn laag en daardoor werkt het personeel op servicebasis. Of je nu in een restaurant, bar of taxi zit, het bedienend personeel verwacht een fooitje van minimaal 15% tenzij de service zo slecht is natuurlijk. Maar hoger mag het natuurlijk altijd. Daardoor zal je ook zien dat de service in Canada van een hoger niveau is dan in Nederland. Let wel op bij het betalen van de rekening dat de fooi er niet al opgezet is want dat gebeurd ook nog wel eens.
Tanken doe je in Canada per liter en alle prijzen zijn nagenoeg hetzelfde bij alle benzinepompen.
Drank, en dan alcoholische drank, is duur in Canada en absoluut niet te koop in een supermarkt.
Bier daarentegen is wel te koop in de supermarkt. Alleen bij de SAQ en LCBO kun je alcoholische drank kopen en hebben een goede sortering. Ook in de restaurant en bars ben je een stuk duurder uit dan in Nederland. Aangezien de vergunning voor de verkoop van drank duur is, komt het soms voor dat restaurants geen alcohol schenken maar je wel je eigen fles mag meenemen, dit staat aangegeven bij het restaurant.
Boodschappen, als je in een cabin of appartement slaapt en zelf kookt, hoort boodschappen doen erbij. Levensmiddelen zijn zo’n 24% duurder dan in Nederland. Een goede supermarktketen is bv IGA, Safeway, Target, Wholefoods en Sobeys.
Elektriciteit in Canada is anders dan bij ons want hier gebruikt men 120V i.p.v. onze 230V en je hebt een aparte stekker nodig om je apparatuur aan te sluiten. Er zijn veel websites die deze wereldstekkers/reisadapters aanbieden, ook op Schiphol Airport of in het vliegtuig kun je deze nog kopen. En bij grote/goede hotels kun je soms ook lenen.
Telefoneren en Internet vanuit Canada is een kostbare bedoening. Mijn provider laat mij niet op internet zonder dat ik daar een aantal handelingen voor moet doen of een extra buitenland abonnement aanschaf. De kosten van telefonie en eventueel een extra abonnement kun je vinden op de website van je provider.
Bijna bij elk hotel is internet aanwezig, kosteloos of tegen betaling. Vaak zijn deze verbindingen openbaar dus doe voorzichtig met persoonlijke informatie.
TIP: McDonalds en Starbucks bieden gratis internet aan maar zijn wel openbaar dus geschikt voor algemene dingen en niet voor bankzaken.

- Vancouver Island / Inside Passage - 16 days, slightly different and include beautiful Vancouver Island and the Inside Passage.
- Oost-CA & NY incl Niagara Falls - 21 days, after 2 times West Canada I chose for the East Coast (Ontario and Quebec) in combination with New York State and Niagara Falls.
- Yukon in combination with Alaska - 21 days, packed by guts and opted for the Yukon, Northwest Territories in combination with Alaska.
- VI/Knight Inlet Lodge- 22 days, not many kilometres but a fantastic trip to a floating hotel and orca watching at Telegraph Cove.
- Alberta & British Columbia - 23 days, bit of a known road trip but very relaxed and also a stay at a horse ranch.
- Take it Slow, Alberta & British Columbia in combination with Americ- 20 days, relaxed through beautiful nature in combination with Montana ( Glacier National Park ) and Idaho.
- Quebec & the Atlantic Coast - 21 days, something you do not often think of but the Atlantic coast and the Gaspésie are super beautiful and certainly in the fall.
- Winter in Jasper - 10days, for the winter lover a short tour through Alberta including the Jasper Icefield Parkway that brings you from Jasper to Lake Louise.
- Winter in Eastern Canada- 19 days, a bitter cold 19 day road trip through Ontario, Quebec and New York State. A true adventure.
- Discover Western Canada by Train, Boat & Car, a different way of discovering Western part of Canada.

May to October are the best times if you want to avoid the cold and December to March are for the winter sports enthusiast. July and august are the most busy months, especially in the National Park.

Drawing cash from an ATM bring extra costs and will be around CAD $ 3.50. With your credit card you can pin everywhere and with your debit cards only at ATMs where a Maestro logo is displayed.

Making calls and use Internet from Canada is a costly affair. My provider doesn’t let me use the internet without me having to take several actions or purchase an extra foreign subscription. The costs of telephony and possibly an extra subscription can be found on the website of your provider.
Almost in every hotel internet is available, free of charge or against payment. Often these connections are public so be careful with personal information.
TIP: McDonalds and Starbucks offer free internet but are public so suitable for general things and not for banking

Ik mag mijzelf gezegend noemen dat ik veel vakanties in Canada heb kunnen door brengen, eigenlijk in elk jaargetijde. Ondanks dat, heb ik nog bij lange na niet gezien wat dit mooie land te bieden heeft en ik ben bang dat me dat nooit gaat lukken.
Toch wil ik voor jullie dit prachtige land een beetje samenvatten, sommige zullen nu misschien denken: ja dit heb ik al zo vaak gelezen en dat zal ook ongetwijfeld zo zijn maar er zullen genoeg mensen zijn die nog nooit in dit mooie land zijn geweest en misschien baat hebben bij dit blog.
Het is tenslotte niet iets wat je alledag doet.!
Canada bestaat uit 10 Provincies:
Alberta (AB), Brits-Columbia (BC), Manitoba, New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland en Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario (ON), Prins Edwardeiland, Quebec(QC) en Saskatchewan
en 3 Territoria:
Northwest Territories (NWT), Nunavat en Yukon (YT).
Alberta.
Tegenstrijdigheden ten top: van de prairies in het oosten naar de ruige bergen in het westen. Van kleine dorpjes met slechts één straat naar grote steden als Edmonton en Calgary. Thuis van Banff National Park en Jasper National Park met hun vele bezienswaardigheden en hun respectievelijke skigebieden
British Columbia.
Een provincie in het westen van Canada. De natuur is zeer uiteenlopend en varieert van ongerepte regenwouden langs de kust tot aan de imposante Rocky Mountains met gletsjermeren en rivieren. Het bruisende Vancouver tegenover kleine wijnplaats in het hart van BC. Thuis van maar liefst 7 Nationale Parken zoals YOHO National Park en Mount Revelstoke National Park. En laten we dan zeker Vancouver Island niet vergeten met zijn grote Douglas Fir bomen.
New Brunswick.
Gelegen aan zee in het oosten van Canada en is de enige provincie die officieel tweetalig Engels-Frans is. Het is een van de 3 Maritieme Provincies, waartoe ook Nova Scotia en Prince Edward Island gerekend worden. Het heeft een indrukwekkend landschap met veel bossen in het binnenland en ruige rotsen met diepe kliffen aan de kust. is.
Ontario.
Rijk aan ontelbare meren, glooiende heuvels, wereldsteden en uitgestrekte bossen die tijdens de Indian Summer/Fall Foliage veranderen in een gekleurd schilder van geel en rood. Rijk aan natuurlijke als culturele wonderen zoals de indrukwekkende Niagara Falls tot het als cultureel werelderfgoed erkende Rideau Canal in de hoofdstad Ottawa. Maar ook Algonquin National Park en de 1000 Islands behoort tot deze mooie provincie
Quebec.
De nadruk in deze grootste provincie van Canada ligt op frans. De combinatie tussen gezellige steden als Montreal en Quebec City met prachtige natuur, zoals het Saquenay’s Fjord National Park en Gaspé Peninsula.. De Québécois (uitgesproken als Kebekwa) houdt van het goede leven en gezelligheid. Aanraders zijn Saint Lawrence River met zijn walvissen en beluga’s en de diepe bossen en de lieflijke valleien.
Northwest Territories.
Onbekend maakt onbemind maar Northwest Territories met zijn ongerepte natuur biedt veel voor de avontuurlijke reiziger! Een plek waar rendieren grazen op uitgestrekte vlaktes, waar het Noorderlicht danst in de heldere nachthemel en waar je de Arctic Circle oversteken via de Dempster Highway op weg naar het verrassende Inuvik.
Yukon.
Nog een in de categorie onbekend maakt onbemind. The Yukon in het noordwesten van Canada is ongerept en dunbevolkt, er wonen hier meer dieren dan mensen en bezit ongekende natuurlijke schoonheid. Reizen door The Yukon brengt het ultieme avonturiersgevoel naar boven. Bezoek Kluane National Park met de hoogste berg Mt. Logan en bereis de machtige Dempster Highway. Maak kennis met de authentieke Gold Rush-sfeer in plaatsen als Dawson City en Whitehorse!
1st Time Canada - 16 dgn, mijn allereerste vakantie in Canada (Brits-Columbia & Alberta) en wat een indrukwekkend avontuur was dat. En wat was dat een gedoe zonder internet.
West Canada inclusief Vancouver Island - 16 dagen, net even anders en inclusief het mooie Vancouver Island en de Inside Passage.
Oost Canada inclusief Niagara Watervallen - 21 dagen, na 2 keer West Canada gekozen voor de Oostkust (Ontario en Quebec) in combinatie met New York State en de Niagara Watervallen.
Yukon in combinatie met Alaska -21 dagen, de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en gekozen voor de Yukon, Northwest Territories in combinatie met Alaska
Beren bij Knight Inlet Lodge -22 dagen, niet veel kilometers maar wel een fantastische trip naar een drijvend hotel en op zoek naar orka’s bij Telegraph Cove.
Alberta & Brits-Columbia -23 dagen, beetje het bekende rondje maar zeer relaxt en ook een verblijf op een paardenranch.

Quebec & de Atlantische kust– 21 dagen, iets wat je niet gauw aan denkt maar de Atlantische kust en de Gaspésie zijn super mooi en zeker in de herfst.
Winter in Jasper - 10 dagen, voor de winterliefhebber een korte rondreis door Alberta
Winter in Oost Canada – 19 dagen, een bitterkoude 19 daagse rondreis door Ontario, Quebec en New York State. Een waar avontuur.

Kort samenvatting van Canada.
Canada is na Rusland, het grootste land van de wereld en ligt in Noord-Amerika.
Aangezien de indianen de eerste inwoners van dit land waren, komt de naam Kanata dan ook uit de indianen taal. Kanata betekent nederzetting. Ook de Inuit behoren tot de eerste bewoners van Canada, de Inuit is de naam waarmee de Eskimo’s uit Groenland en Canada zichzelf aanduiden.
Vanaf de 15e en 16e eeuw werd het door Europeanen, hoofdzakelijk Engelsen en Fransen, verkend en gekoloniseerd. De kolonie Nieuw-Frankrijk werd door de Engelsen veroverd in 1873. In 1931 kreeg Canada meer autonomie binnen het Britse Rijk en werd door middel van de Canada Act in 1982 onafhankelijk van het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
De hoofdstad van Canada is Ottawa in de provincie Ontario.
Tot de grotere steden behoren:
Toronto, ON – Montreal, QC – Vancouver, BC – Calgary, AB – Quebec (QC) – Edmonton, AB
In het zuiden liggen de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, het is dan ook aan deze grens, dat in een strook van 200 kilometer de meeste inwoners van Canada wonen.
In het westen ligt de Amerikaanse staat Alaska en ten noordoosten ligt Groenland.
Wie vanuit Europa naar de Westkust van Canada vliegt, vliegt heel lang over het vasteland van Canada.
Canada is in principe tweetalig maar alleen in Provincie Quebec wordt hoofdzakelijk Frans gesproken, zeker in de kleinere plaatsen is het lastig om in het Engels uit te voeten te kunnen maar in Quebec City spreekt iedereen Engels ook al zullen ze altijd in het Frans starten.
Weer en Klimaat en Beste Reistijd. Oost- en Westkust hebben een zeeklimaat waarvan de westkust gematigd is. Het noordelijk deel van Canada heeft een pool-klimaat en de rest een landklimaat. Vooral het Noordelijk deel heeft grote invloed op het winterweer.
Ach wat is beste reistijd? Ik denk dat dat voor iedereen verschillend is en afhankelijk wat je zoekt.
Mei t/m oktober zijn de beste tijden als je de kou wilt mijden en December t/m maart zijn er voor de wintersportliefhebber. Juli en augustus zijn de drukste maanden vooral in de Nationale Parken.
Reisdocumenten.Een geldig paspoort dat bij vertrek uit Canada nog geldig is. Ikzelf hou altijd 3 maanden aan.
Sinds 2016 heb je ook eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) toestemming nodig als je Canada in komt per vliegtuig.
Dit formulier is heel makkelijk zelf te regelen via de website van de Governmentof Canada, kosten CAD $ 7 (op de koers van 12/3/2018 omgerekend € 4.45) en je hebt een creditkaart nodig. De toestemming heb je binnen een aantal minuten in je mailbox en deze toestemming wordt gekoppeld aan je paspoort en is 5 jaar geldig met een max van 6 maanden. Een nieuw paspoort betekent nieuwe eTA aanvragen want verlengen of wijzigen is niet mogelijk.
Vergeet je je eTA toestemming aan te vragen dan kom je simpelweg niet met je vlucht mee en al helemaal Canada niet in.
Geld en Bankzaken.De valuta waar mee betaald wordt is de Canadese Dollar (CAD). De actuele wisselkoersen kun je vinden op de website van Wisselkoers.nl Canadese Dollars zijn te bestellen bij je eigen bank of GWKTravelex, maar ook heel eenvoudig aan te schaffen op Schiphol Airport bij bv AbnAmro of GWK. Ik zelf doe altijd op de laatste manier en dat bevalt prima.
TIP: vraag kleine coupures want CAD $ 100 en zelfs CAD $ 50 worden niet aangenomen, simpelweg omdat ze er niet van terug hebben.
Zonder een creditkaart kom je nergens in Canada, want deze kaart wordt voor nagenoeg alles als onderpand gevraagd.
Een auto huren is zonder creditkaart nagenoeg onmogelijk en als ze het wel willen accepteren zul je een fix cash bedrag moeten achterlaten voor eventueel diefstal of schade.
Hotels gebruiken het om een “pre-autorisatie” (voorreservering) aan te vragen voor eventuele kosten die je maakt in restaurant of bar of schade aanbrengt aan de kamer.
Betalen in een supermarkt of winkel met je gewone pinpas (debet-card) gaat je zeker niet lukken want er worden geen buitenlandse pinpassen geaccepteerd dus betalen doe je met je creditkaart.
Pinnen bij een automaat (ATM) brengt kosten met zich mee en zal zo rond de CAD$ 3.50 liggen. Met je creditkaart kun je overal pinnen en met de pinpas (debet-card) alleen bij ATM’s waar een maestro logo staat aangegeven.
TIP: aangezien alle pre-autorisaties die de hotels op je creditkaart doen, heb je een behoorlijk limiet nodig op je creditkaart. Dit kun je doen door je limiet te verhogen indien mogelijk of door geld te storten op de creditkaart. Deze pre-autorisatie kan soms behoorlijk lang openblijven staan maar verdwijnen in principe weer na 30 dagen. Zo staan er van mijn vakantie in jan/febr nog steeds bedragen gereserveerd en dat is best lastig als je je kaart nodig hebt.
Aankopen, Fooien, Tanken, Drank, Boodschappen, Elektriciteit, Telefonie & Internet.
De Sales Tax in Canada en deze wisselt per provincie is een naar gebeuren. Op het prijskaartje staat de basisprijs van het aan te schaffen artikel en daarboven op komt bij de kassa de sales tax.
Dus dat is altijd weer even wennen als je denkt iets goedkoops te hebben gekocht. Ook in restaurants komt er nog de nodige kosten bovenop. En dan is dit nog zonder fooi.
Fooien in Canada gaan heel anders dan in Nederland. De basissalarissen in Canada zijn laag en daardoor werkt het personeel op servicebasis. Of je nu in een restaurant, bar of taxi zit, het bedienend personeel verwacht een fooitje van minimaal 15% tenzij de service zo slecht is natuurlijk. Maar hoger mag het natuurlijk altijd. Daardoor zal je ook zien dat de service in Canada van een hoger niveau is dan in Nederland. Let wel op bij het betalen van de rekening dat de fooi er niet al opgezet is want dat gebeurd ook nog wel eens.
Tanken doe je in Canada per liter en alle prijzen zijn nagenoeg hetzelfde bij alle benzinepompen.
Drank, en dan alcoholische drank, is duur in Canada en absoluut niet te koop in een supermarkt.
Bier daarentegen is wel te koop in de supermarkt. Alleen bij de SAQ en LCBO kun je alcoholische drank kopen en hebben een goede sortering. Ook in de restaurant en bars ben je een stuk duurder uit dan in Nederland. Aangezien de vergunning voor de verkoop van drank duur is, komt het soms voor dat restaurants geen alcohol schenken maar je wel je eigen fles mag meenemen, dit staat aangegeven bij het restaurant.
Boodschappen, als je in een cabin of appartement slaapt en zelf kookt, hoort boodschappen doen erbij. Levensmiddelen zijn zo’n 24% duurder dan in Nederland. Een goede supermarktketen is bv IGA, Safeway, Target, Wholefoods en Sobeys.
Elektriciteit in Canada is anders dan bij ons want hier gebruikt men 120V i.p.v. onze 230V en je hebt een aparte stekker nodig om je apparatuur aan te sluiten. Er zijn veel websites die deze wereldstekkers/reisadapters aanbieden, ook op Schiphol Airport of in het vliegtuig kun je deze nog kopen. En bij grote/goede hotels kun je soms ook lenen.
Telefoneren en Internet vanuit Canada is een kostbare bedoening. Mijn provider laat mij niet op internet zonder dat ik daar een aantal handelingen voor moet doen of een extra buitenland abonnement aanschaf. De kosten van telefonie en eventueel een extra abonnement kun je vinden op de website van je provider.
Bijna bij elk hotel is internet aanwezig, kosteloos of tegen betaling. Vaak zijn deze verbindingen openbaar dus doe voorzichtig met persoonlijke informatie.
TIP: McDonalds en Starbucks bieden gratis internet aan maar zijn wel openbaar dus geschikt voor algemene dingen en niet voor bankzaken.
Met deze overvloed aan informatie maak ik een einde aan dit Blog en hoop dat het een handvat is voor een volgende reis.
