Cuddle Oehoe vs Terror Oehoe

"The World Upside Down"

In Purmerend they have the feared and much-discussed ' terror-OWL ', but his mild-mannered kind turns out to have settled down in the Veluwse Noordeinde.

The ' hug-OWL ' as he is called, sits lovingly on your head. Bird lovers travel massively towards the village to catch a glimpse of the pet beast.

Nature photographer Menno Schaefer got the eagle-owl in front of his lens. "He flies towards you if you have imitated his sound. On the pads of its paws he gently lands on your head. The animal doesn't use its nails. With its beak he reaps in your hair and hover with the feet. I believe that it points to mating behavior. "

That last is also suspected by Gejo Wadhwa of the Eagle OWL Working Group Netherlands.
"So it seems to be a young male that has moulted yet. An OWL does not fly towards people, so I guess, it comes out of captivity. It has damaged tail feathers, he could have escaped from his cage. It would not surprise me, because there are a lot of Dutch people who take an OWL as a pet on impulse, but later regret it and release it. "

Meanwhile, the municipality of Oldebroek, where Noordeinde belongs to, issued a ' bird alert ',
in the hope that the owner will come forward.
