Katmai National Park & Preserve: 100 Jaar Beschermd Natuurgebied
Let me start with to apologize for the quality of photos as these were taken in the for me non digital timezone (2000), so I scanned the photos in but the time definately has damages the photos.
But nevertheless I wanted to put in a couple to show what you can expect.
One of the most beautiful things I've seen during my travels in North America lies in Alaska and if I'm honest I think that my round trip in Alaska was one of the most beautiful trips I've made thus far.
This year, in September, Katmai National Park & Preserve exists 100 years.
Although it was only recognized in 1980 as National Park, the protected state of National Monument exists since 1918.
The park is mainly known for its "Alaskan Brown Bears" and "Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes".
Katmai NP is an American National Park in the south of Alaska, about 470 km south of Anchorage.
The headquarters of Katmai NP is located in King Salmon and can only be reached by air.
From Anchorage it takes about 1.30 hours.
The park is managed by the National Park Service, more information can be found on their website.
The park does not charge an entrance fee.
There are several lodging opportunities in both outside and inside Katmai NP, through the above link you will find more information for lodging in the park.
During my visit I picked a hotel in King Salmon. More information about lodging in this area can be found here.
The park can be reached from King Salmon in 2 ways: by air or by boat.
During my trip in 2000 I visited Katmai in both ways and I can tell you it is an experience, especially if you are flying because you do this with a seaplane.
When I saw the plane it was a bit of a scary, but not going was not an option.
You are weighed before the flight so that they know how much weight there is in the plane and for the balance. I was allowed to sit in the cockpit, probably because looked so nervous. It was such a cool experience.
The majority of visitors arrive at Brooks Camp, where you will find a lodge, restaurant and ranger station.
Before you can continue on the island, at least during my visit, you get lessons in "Bear Etiquettes" or the Do and Don’t in the neighborhood of the bears.
One thing is sure, the bears have priority over the humans, except if the bear comes too close to the lodge, then they will be driven away with gentle force.

From this place you can therefore do the following:
Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes Excursion.
The great eruption of the Novarupta in June 1912 created the Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes. The valley has a size of 100 km2 and 30-213m deep trenches created by lava.
The park has a total of 18 volcanoes, some of which are still active such as Mount Katmai, to which the park is named and the Novarupta.
You can book an excursion to the valley, you first walk from the lodge to the bus which is located a little further away. During my walk to the bus we had to take a detour over the beach because there was a big male bear sleeping on the path to the bus.
This day long excursion is absolutely worthwhile, the bus ride is a 74 km round trip and the hike you can make through the valley is just over 5 km with a difference of 300m in elevation.
Reservation of this excursion is mandatory and must be arranged in advance via Katmailand Inc or booked at Brooks Lodge. There are costs charged for this excursion.

Bears.
But the biggest attraction of Katmai NP are the big brown Alaskan bears and with its 2,200 bears Katmai NP is on of the best place to see bears in the world. Furthermore, there are many more on the Alaska Peninsula.
Here in Katmai you do not have to worry that you do not see a bear.

Due to the high population of salmon that swim in the lakes and rivers bear sighting have a high success rate. Especially in the months of July and September when there are many salmons, they are easy to see near Brooks Camp. My visit was in June and I have seen a lot of bears.
There are 3 platforms from where you have a good view. I think there were only 2 platforms during my visit, but I can also easily have missed number 3.
Rangers are available on these platforms for questions and explanations.
The "Lower River Platform" offers excellent views over the river and the surrounding meadows.

If you want to go to the other 2 platforms, via Brook Falls Trail, a short walk brings through the forest where you have a chance to encounter a bear lies around 90%.
During the salmon season they only think about food so they do not even notice you.
Although I honestly must confess that it is somewhat creepy when such a big boy accompanies you for a short stroll.
When you leave the Lower River Platform you have to report to the Ranger so that they know that you are going to walk, as soon as you arrive at another platform you have to report again so they know you made it safely.
Arriving at Brooks Fall Platform you have a great view of the fishing bears due to the difference in the river.
I have spent two days at these platforms and enjoyed all the frolicking, fighting and fishing bears.

A funny moment, at least for those who did not have to deal with this, was when we could not see the road as it lies just around the corner from the lower platform, a few cries of visitors were heard: Ho Bear, Yo Bear, Go Away Bear. It turned out that two bears fought a modest battle and were chasing each other and came very close to the upcoming visitors. But the bears had little interest in the hikers.
If you are a true fisherman you came to the right place but bare in mind a visit from a curious bear, looking for an easy meal is certainly one of the possibilities.
I certainly hope to go back to Alaska a third time because nature is very beautiful and rugged.

Laat ik me als eerste verontschuldigen voor de slechte kwaliteit foto's maar deze zijn genomen in het voor mij nog niet digitale tijdzone (2.000) Daarom heb ik er een paar ingescanned maar de tand des tijds heeft ze er niet beter opgemaakt. Toch maar een aantal gebruikt om een indruk te geven van dit mooie stuk natuur.
Een van de mooiste dingen die ik heb gezien tijdens mijn reizen door Noord Amerika, bevindt zich in Alaska en als ik eerlijk ben denk ik dat mijn rondreis in Alaska een van de mooiste reizen was die ik heb gemaakt.
Dit jaar, in september, bestaat Katmai National Park & Preserve 100 jaar.
Alhoewel het pas in 1980 erkend werd als National Park, de beschermde staat van National Monument al sinds 1918 bestaat.
Het park is hoofdzakelijk bekend om zijn “Alaskan Brown Bears” en “Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes”.
Katmai NP is een Amerikaans Nationaal Park in het zuiden van Alaska, zo’n 470 km zuidelijk van Anchorage.

Ik zelf heb toen gekozen voor een hotel in King Salmon. Meer informatie over accommodaties in deze omgeving vind je via deze website.
Het park is vanuit King Salmon te bereiken via boot of vliegtuig.
Tijdens mijn trip in 2000 heb ik Katmai op beide manieren bezocht en ik kan je zeggen het is een belevenis vooral als je gaat vliegen want dit doe je met een watervliegtuig.
Toen ik zag dat ik daarin moest was het toch wel even slikken maar ja wie A zegt, zegt ook B.
Je wordt voor de vlucht gewogen zodat ze precies weten hoeveel gewicht er zich in het vliegtuig bevindt en voor de verdeling. Ik mocht, waarschijnlijk omdat ik zo angstig keek, in de cockpit zitten. En wat was dat gaaf.
Het grootste gedeelte van de bezoekers komt bij Brooks Camp aan, hier vind je een lodge, restaurant en ranger station.
Voordat je, tenminste tijdens mijn bezoek, verder het eiland op mag krijg je les in “Bear Etiquettes” of te wel de Do and Don’t in de buurt van de beren.
Want een ding is zeker de beren hebben hier voorrang op de mens, behalve als de beer te dicht bij de lodge omgeving komt want dan wordt hij met zacht dwang weer weg gejaagd.
Vanaf deze plek kun je dus het volgende doen:
Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes Excursie.
De grote uitbarsting van de Novarupta in juni 1912 creëerde de Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes. De vallei heeft een omvang van 100 km2 en 30-213m diepe door lava gecreëerde geulen.
Het park heeft in totaal 18 vulkanen waarvan er nog een aantal actief zoals Mount Katmai, waarnaar het park is vernoemd en de Novarupta.
Je kunt op Katmai een excursie boeken naar de vallei, je loopt eerst vanaf de lodge naar de bus die een klein stukje verderop staat te wachten. Tijdens het kleine stukje te voet naar de bus (gelegen bij het Lower River Platform), moest er een ommetje gemaakt worden over het strand omdat er een beer lag te slapen op het pad naar de bus.
Deze dag lange excursie is absoluut de moeite waard, de bus rit is een klein 74 km rondreis en de wandeling die je kunt/gaat maken door de vallei is iets meer dan 5 km met een hoogte verschil van 300m.
Reserveren van deze excursie is verplicht en moet van te voren geregeld worden via Katmailand Inc of geboekt worden bij Brooks Lodge. Er worden kosten gerekend voor deze excursie.
Bears.
Maar de grootste attractie van Katmai NP zijn toch wel de grote bruine beren en met zijn 2.200 beren behoort Katmai NP tot de beste plek om beren te zien in de wereld. Verder leven er op de Alaska Peninsula nog veel meer.
Hier in Katmai hoef je niet bang te zijn dat je geen beer ziet want door de hoge populatie zalm die hier in de meren en rivieren zwemt kan het gewoon niet missen. Zeker in de maanden juli en september als de zalm hier uitbundig zwemt zijn ze vlakbij Brooks Camp makkelijk te zien. Mijn bezoek was in juni en toen heb ik al heel veel beren gezien.
Er zijn 3 platvormen vanaf waar je een goed uitzicht hebt. Volgens mij waren er tijdens mijn bezoek nog maar 2 platvormen maar ik kan nummer 3 natuurlijk ook makkelijk gemist hebben.
Op deze platvormen zijn rangers aanwezig voor vragen en uitleg.
Het “Lower River Platform” biedt een uitstekend uitzicht over de rivier en de omliggende grasvelden.
Mocht je naar de andere 2 platvormen willen, dan gaat dat via Brook Falls Trail, een korte wandeling door de bossen waar je kans om een beer tegen te komen, ik denk wel 90% is, maar aangezien ze alleen maar aan eten denken hebben ze je niet eens in de gaten. Alhoewel ik eerlijk bekennen dat het toch wel enigszins griezel is als zo’n grote jongen gewoon een eindje met je op loopt.
Bij vertrek van het Lower River Platform moet je je bij de Ranger melden zodat zij weten dat je gaat lopen, zo gauw je bij een ander platvorm aankomt moet je je daar weer melden en wordt je afgestreept als veilig overgekomen.
Ik ben toen beland bij Brooks Fall Platform waar je door het hoogte verschil in de rivier een prachtig uitzicht op hebt op de vissende beren.
Twee dagen heb ik door gebracht bij deze platvormen en moet eerlijk zeggen genoten van alle kapriolen uithalende, gevechten en vissende beren.
Een grappig, tenminste voor degene die hier niet mee te maken hadden, was een moment dat we vanaf de weg net om de hoek dus niet zichtbaar voor het onderste platvorm, een paar benauwde kreten hoorde van bezoekers: Ho Bear, Yo Bear, Go Away Bear. Het bleek dat er twee beren aan een bescheiden gevecht bezig waren en elkaar achterna zaten en toch wel heel dichtbij de wandelende bezoekers kwamen. Maar de beren hadden weinig oog voor de wandelaars.
Mocht je een vervend visser zijn dan kun je hier zeker je hart ophalen maar dat je bezoek krijgt van een nieuwsgierige beer die op zoek is naar een makkelijk maaltje behoort dan zeker tot de mogelijkheden.
Ik hoop zeker nog een derde keer terug te gaan naar Alaska want de natuur is hier toch wel heel mooi en ruig.
