Waar Twee Woestijnen Samenkomen!

Twee verschillende woestijn ecosystemen, de Mojave en de Colorado, komen samen in Joshua Tree National Park. Een fascinerende verscheidenheid aan planten en dieren maken hun onderkomen in een land gebeeldhouwd door de sterke wind en soms overstromingen door regen. Donkere nachtelijke hemel, een rijke culturele geschiedenis, en surrealistische geologische kenmerken, toegevoegd aan het wonder van deze uitgestrekte woestijn in het zuiden van Californië.

Creosote Bush

De twee woestijnen worden bepaald door hoog en laag in het parket duidelijke verschillen. De Colorado woestijn (onder de 910m), onderdeel van de Sonora woestijn, beslaat het oostelijk deel van JTNP en hier in dit gedeelte groeit de Creosote Bush overvloedig.

De hoger, iets koeler en nattere Mojave woestijn, het westelijk deel van JTNP, is thuis van de Joshua Tree. Mormonen beschouwde dit als de leden van Joshua die ze naar het beloofde land zouden leiden.
De Joshua boom maar eigenlijk is het een grote plant behorende tot de Yucca’s was dan ook de reden voor het oprichten van het nationale park

Joshua Tree kan het hele jaar bezocht worden, elk jaargetijde heeft zijn eigen bekoring.
Gemiddelde drukte is er in de herfst, druk in het voorjaar als de bloemen gaan bloeien en rustig in de hete zomer.
Zomerse temperaturen zijn heet met een dikke 38 gr en ’s avonds afkoelend naar 24 gr.
Winterse temperaturen overdag zo’n 15 gr en ’s nachts vorst.
Lente en herfst hebben een comfortabele temperatuur tussen de 29 en 10 gr.
De vochtigheidsgraad is zeer laag met slechts 25%
Ondanks de 9 kampeer mogelijkheden die het park rijk is zal je hier weinig rugzak toeristen zien omdat het gewoon weg te droog is.
Het park is wel heel geliefd voor korte wandelingen, fietsen en het beklimmen van rotsen.

Het park heeft 3 ingangen:
West Ingang bij Joshua Tree Village
Noord Ingang bij Twentynine Palms
Zuid Ingang bij Cottonwood Spring

Afhankelijk hoeveel tijd je hebt of wilt besteden aan JTNP, het is een goede combinatie met een paar dagen relaxen of golven in Palm Springs.
Als je hier 2-3 nachten blijft dan heb je alle tijd om Joshua Tree goed te ontdekken.
2 nachten als je er wil rondkijken/rijden en 3 nachten als je er ook wil wandelen of klimmen.
Palm Springs is zeer mondain en altijd zonnig . De gemiddelde temperatuur zomers ligt rond 43-44 gr maar de temperaturen liggen eerder tegen 50 dan tegen 40. En je zult hier dan ook geen terras-\verwarmer zien maar terrasverkoeler. Deze blazen een soort verkoelende nevel uit.
Palm Spring heeft goede restaurants en hotel van goedkoop tot duur en de kans dat je hier een beroemdheid tegenkomt is behoorlijk groot. Wij hadden Eric Roberts(broer van Julia) in het hotel.

Where Two Deserts Meet!

Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.

The deserts, two large ecosystems primarily determined by elevation, come together in the park. Few areas more vividly illustrate the contrast between “high” and “low” desert. Below 3,000 feet (910 m), the Colorado Desert (part of the Sonoran Desert), occupying the eastern half of the park, is dominated by the abundant creosote bush. Adding interest to this arid land are small stands of spidery ocotillo and cholla cactus.
The higher, slightly cooler, and wetter Mojave Desert is the special habitat of the undisciplined Joshua tree, extensive stands of which occur throughout the western half of the park. According to legend, Mormon pioneers considered the limbs of the Joshua trees to resemble the upstretched arms of Joshua leading them to the promised land.

Joshua Tree National Park may be visited year round. Each season adds its personality to the desert's character.

Autumn is average busy, busy in the spring when the flowers start to bloom and quiet in the hot summer.

Summer temperatures are hot with 100 degrees cooling down to 75 degrees at night.

Winter temperatures around 59 degrees with some frost during the night.

Sping and Autumn have a comfortable 84 degrees and nights around 50 degrees.

Humidity is low with only 25% .

Despite the 9 campground you will not encounter backpackers as there is too little water.

But the park is known for its short hikes, biking and rock climbing.

The park has 3 entrances:

West Entrance at Joshua Tree Village

North Entrance at Twentynine Palms

South Entrance at Cottonwood Springs

Depending on how much time you have or want  to spend in JTNP, it’s a good combination with a couple of days relaxing or golfing in Palm Springs.

If you stay 2-3 nights you have plenty of time to explore Joshue Tree.

2 nights if you just want to drive/look around a bit and 3 nights if you want to hike of bike.

Palm Springs is very sophisticated and the sun always shines. Average summer temperatures lie around 101-111 degrees but 122 degrees is more common than 104 degrees. Therefore you won’t see any heaters over here but coolers, which spray a cooling mist.

Palm Springs has good restaurants and hotels, from cheap to expensive and the chance you bump into a celebrity is possible. We ourselves had Eric Roberts (brother of Julia) staying at our hotel.
