Waarom Colorado / Denver & omliggende staten?
"Omdat het een trip is die je niet snel zult vergeten, door de verschillende natuur maar ook qua temperatuur."

Hier een kort overzicht van een prachtige reis die 6 staten doorkruist, Colorado, Zuid Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah en Arizona. De volledige reis kun je terug vinden op mijn website. 

Een trip om nooit te vergeten met zoveel hoogtepunten, prachtige natuur en ook plaatsen waar toch niet veel mensen komen.
bv. Custer State Park, Badlands, een onvergetelijk verblijf in Wall in South Dakota maar ook Durango in Colorado.

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, Colorado

Maar eerst het prachtige Rocky Mountain National Park en het bijbehorende plaatsje Estes Park. 
Het ligt op 164km van Denver – via Nederland dat aan de Peak to Peak Scenic Byway ligt, dit is veel mooier dan via de snelweg en geeft meteen een goede indruk van de hele mooie omgeving. In RMNP is heel veel te zien en te doen (tips onderaan). Meerdere dagen hierdoor brengen is absoluut geen straf.
Note: RMNP viert zijn 100-jarig bestaan.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Doorgereden naar Cheyenne (150km) maar via de lokale wegen – dus via Glen Haven. Cheyene is puur stop geweest en de dame van ons hotel vroeg dan ook “What The Heck Do You Do In Cheyenne, Cheyenne of All Places”. En het klopt er is hier niets behalve een mall en een militair vliegveld.

Via Cheyenne naar Custer State Park (420km). Zeer kaal stuk weg dus grootste deel via de snelweg gereden en kan dus eigenlijk wel gecombineerd worden met de dag ervoor, als je het niet vervelend vindt km’s te vreten.

Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Monument en de Badlands in South Dakota - alle 3 zeer indrukwekkend door het verschil.

Yellowstone & Grand Teton NP  (alhoewel een van mijn  favoriete parken) sla ik beide over voor commentaar, daar wordt genoeg over geschreven (mogelijk kom ik hier in een separate blog op terug). Jackson is een MUST.
De Amerikaanse Centrale Bank vergadert hier niet voor niets.

UTAH is gewoon een must met Arches NP, Canyonland NP, maar ook Death Horse Point en Shafter Canyon Road. 3 nachten is hier makkelijk door te brengen.

Door naar Monument Valley Tribal Park, prachtige omgeving met zijn rode Needles en een zonsondergang aanschouwen is hier fantastisch. 
Dat maakt een overnachting een must. En een overnachtig in het park is dan eigenlijk het mooist.

Via Four Corners naar Mesa Verde National Park, 15 km ten Oosten Cortez in Colorado. Prachtige klifwoningen, huizen die zijn gebouwd in ondiepe grotten in de wanden van het ravijn. Maak hier onder begeleiding van Rangers een excursie.

Volgende stop Durango, Colorado waar je een trein trip kunt maken met de Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Dit maakt een stop voor 2 nachten nodig.

Onze weg vervolgend kom je in “Silverton”, leuke voor een stop, als je de trein niet hebt genomen. De Million Dollar Highway is prachtig om over te rijden en vlak na Montrose is een stop in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park zeker de moeite waard maar dit doe je niet even dus een extra stop is dan gewenst.

Verdere Tips:
1. Old Fall River Road in RMNP – mooie gravel weg maar vaak gesloten
2. Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Hotel is basis geweest voor de film De Shining (niet de filmlocatie)
3. Boulder Brook on Fall River vlakbij de ingang van RMNP, mooie Cabins
4. Bear Lake Road/Glacier Gorge Junction Trail in RMNP
5. Frontier Cabin in Wall, SD – beter dan slapen in de hotels in Badlands NP
6. Bill Cody Scenic Byway – Sylvan Pass – beide maken de Oost Ingang van Yellowstone mooi
7. Outlet Silverthorne – goed shoppen voor je naar huis gaat.

Why Colorado / Denver & surrounding states?
"Because it’s a trip you will not easily forget due to large differences in nature but also from a temperature perspective".

Here a short review of a terrific trip which crosses 6 states, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Arizona.

An unforgettable trip with a so many highlights, amazing nature and destinations where not very many people go to.
eg. Custer State Park, Badlands, an unforgettable stay in Wall, SD but also Durango, CO.

But let’s start with beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park and the village of Estes Park.
It lies about 103 miles from Denver - via Nederland located on the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, this route is more beautiful than via the Highway and gives a great impression of the Colorado beauty. In RMNP is a lot to do and see (tips below). A stay of several days is recommended and that will not be a punishment I would say.
Note: RMNP is celebrating its 100st birthday.

Next stop Cheyene (94 miles) but via local roads - thus via Glen Haven. Cheyenne pure an overnight stop and the lady of the hotel simple asked us: "What The Heck Do You Do in Cheyenne, Cheyenne of All Places'. And she is right there is nothing besides a military airport and a mall.

From Cheyene to Custer State Park (263 miles). Pretty boring drive and therefore we drove the highway and could be combined with the day if you don't mind the many absorbing miles.

Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Monument and the Badlands in South Dakota - all 3 very impressive due to the differences in landscape.

I will skip commenting Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Park (although one of my favourite parks) as already many people write about them (might come back in a separate blog later on). Jackson Hole is a MUST.
The FED has not chosen Jackson because it’s so ugly.

UTAH you can't ignore with Arches NP, Canyonlands National Park, but also Death Horse Point and the Shafter Canyon Road. A 3 night stay is easily covered.

We continue to Monument Valley Tribal Park, a beautiful area with its red Needles and watching a sunset here is fantastic. But that makes an overnight stay a must, preferable in the park.

Via Four Corners to Mesa Verde National Park, 15 km East Cortez in Colorado. Beautiful cliff dwellings, houses built in shallow caves in the walls of the ravine. Make an excursion with a rangers, they will tell you a lot about the dwellings and its habitants.

Next stop Durango, Colorado where you can make a trip with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad . This makes a stop for 2 nights necessary.

Our road continuing, we enter " Silverton " and if you have not taken the train trip, this is a nice stop . The Million Dollar Highway is beautiful to drive and just past Montrose a stop at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is definitely worthwhile. But demands an additional overnight stop.

2. Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Hotel stands base for the movie The Shining (not the film location)
3. Boulder Brook on Fall River close to the entrance of RMNP, beautiful cabins
4. Bear Lake Road/Glacier Gorge Junction Trail in RMNP
5. Frontier Cabin in Wall, SD – belter than hotels inside Badlands NP
6. Bill Cody Scenic Byway – Sylvan Pass – both make the East Entrance of Yellowstone very beautiful.
7. Outlet Silverthorne – good shopping before you go home.
